Last Thursday, May 6th, Nancy Vieira and Fred Martins performed at the Soam As Guitarras festival, at Cinema Charlot in Setúbal, with guest Bruno Chaveiro on Portuguese guitar
Nancy Vieira, one of the most important voices in Cape Verde’s music, and Fred Martins, a composer and the award-winning Brazilian guitarist, unite on stage in an intimate concert of two enormous talents that combined bossa with the rhythms of Cape Verde. Music of extreme quality, of total sincerity, capable of grasping bodies and hearts, performed by two artists who are as genuine as they are universal.
In a warm and intimate atmosphere, Nancy and Fred gave their first official concert together, and the first in Setúbal, with interpretations of themes such as “Samba Me Diz“, “A Felicidade”, “Tú Me Acostumbraste”, “Triste Alegria“ and “Novamente“, and with a special guest on the Portuguese guitar, Bruno Chaveiro, “It is an honor and privilege to share the stage with you and I feel deeply honored. Nancy Vieira is a Cape Verdean singer and one of the most renowned artists exploring the immense musical heritage of Cape Verde at the present time, which, in the specific case of morna, even deserved a recent distinction from UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The artist, who resides in Portugal, debuted in 1995 but started to show up in 1999 when she appeared in a compilation entitled Música de Intervenção Cabo-Verdiana singing alongside the legendary Ildo Lobo.
Over the years, Nancy’s quality was also manifested in the invitations she received, having sung alongside Rui Veloso or Júlio Pereira and even adding her voice to one of the tributes dedicated to José Afonso, evidence of a wide versatility that has always manifested itself in his art.
Standing out among the artists of his generation, Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Fred Martins created a diverse repertoire inserted in the musical tradition of emblematic Brazilian composers. In a contemporary style, his compositions portray a conversation between bossa nova, samba, jazz, blues, rock, flamenco, and fado, among other styles.
Fred has already released 6 albums and 2 DVDs, and the next album – Ultramarino – will be released in May 2021. The talent of the composer was recognized by the prestigious “Visa Award for Brazilian Music” and his compositions have been interpreted by renowned Brazilian musicians, including Adriana Calcanhoto, Ney Matogrosso, Maria Rita, Zélia Duncan, and MPB4, among others.
The Soam As Guitarras festival is a project of the Oeiras City Council and the promoter Ghude, with the co-production of the Évora City Council, the Póvoa de Varzim City Council, and the Setúbal City Council with the partners CISION, Hope Consulting, Antena 1, Blitz and SIC Notícias.
