Paredes de Coura Rock School has selected five national bands for the 2018 edition of that artistic residence dedicated to rock, with the aim of stimulating the appearance of new municipal projects, the organization announced today.
Initially, according to Space Ensemble, the objective was to select three bands for the resident bands program, the novelty of the 2018 edition of Escola do Rock, but the quality of the proposals that applied for the new bet led the organization to choose five musical projects.
“Wicked Youth, Dream People, Sand in Shorts, DOWN 4 U, Cuckoo Let Us are the winning bands of the contest for resident bands of the School of Rock Paredes de Coura. They are going to transform from 16 to 21 December. The calm village of Alto Minho in an authentic band incubator, “Nuno Alves of the Space Ensemble said today.
The selected bands come from Lisbon, Monção, Paredes de Coura and one of them is composed of students who participated in previous editions of the School of Rock and that come from Castelo de Paiva, Porto and Maia.
The jury responsible for the selection of resident bands included members of Paredes de Coura Chamber and musicians and trainers of the Space Ensemble.
This program of resident bands, which aims to “encourage the creation and production of music”, will guarantee selected groups, among other conditions, an exclusive rehearsal room, the possibility of producing and recording a single with the producer and with the support technician of the School of Rock, the participation in a concert during the week of that artistic residence and the action in future initiatives and ‘tours’ of the School of Rock.
The participation of the selected bands “will not be limited to the Caixa da Música, where all the activities for the participants of the Rock School will take place, and during the week there will be rehearsals in different spaces of Paredes de Coura, as well as performances in various bars and cultural associations of the county “.
The Rock School – Paredes de Coura was launched by the local Chamber in 2014. The following year, the initiative was awarded the UM-Cidades Prize awarded by the University of Minho.
The six-day program of the Space Ensemble’s art school includes essays, training, film sessions, jam sessions, showcases, concerts, demonstrations of instruments and workshops.
Registration for the class of 2018 edition of the School of Rock continues until December 12.
At the end of this artistic residence dedicated to rock, there is a concert presenting the work done by about 50 participants. This show is later featured in ‘tours’.
The bands of previous editions of Escola do Rock have twice performed at the Paredes de Coura festival, the last in 2018 at the opening concert of the 25th edition of the event. The students have already passed through classrooms such as Serralves and the Casa da Música in Oporto and also worked in Spain.
