Flash Forest expects to plant 1 billion trees by 2028

Increasing the Earth’s forests, with an area the size of the United States, could reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide by 25%. The report “The global potential for tree restoration” revealed that there is enough land to increase world forest cover by one third, without affecting cities or agriculture.

This is still a distant goal, but for starters, the idea of Flash Forest is to plant 40,000 trees with the help of drones in an area devastated by fires in northern Toronto, Canada. From then on, the startup will expand its operations to other regions and aims to plant one billion trees by 2028.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, humanity needs to plant 1 billion hectares of trees so that we can hope to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C. This represents a reforested area the size of the United States. And Flash Forest is one among many startups that bet on drones as an alternative to achieve this goal.

When starting a new reforestation project, Flash Forest maps the area and identifies which are the most suitable places for planting, according to the type of soil and vegetation that already exists. In the next stage, the “planter drones”, come into action, accurately depositing seed capsules in the indicated places. These drones even have a pneumatic seed firing device that can be used in more difficult terrain.

In addition to the latest generation drones, the company uses aerial mapping, automation and ecological science software to reforest, especially areas affected by fires.
