It was beautiful!!! It was Alcântara

The Alcântara March is the winner of the 2024 edition of the Lisbon Popular Marches Competition

“No matter how much paint flows, Alcântara is the neighbourhood with the more style” (“Por mais que corra a tinta, Alcântara é o bairro com mais pinta”) was the theme chosen by this year’s winner, inspired by the art of painters and artists who find a space to express themselves in the Alcântara neighbourhood.

In second place was the Marvila March and third was the Alfama March.

This year’s edition of the Lisbon Popular Marches was attended by thousands of people who, on Avenida da Liberdade, watched the traditional Santo António night parade and the highlight of the Lisbon Festivities.

The collective celebration in the city’s neighbourhoods – including marchers, godfathers and godmothers, standard bearers, mascots, water bearers, musicians (cavalinho), rehearsers, and those responsible for the collectives and the organization – involved more than 1,600 participants.

This year the Dragon Dance, brought by 30 members of the General Sports Association of Macau Lo Leong (guest group) opened the parade, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region. This was followed by the Children’s March of Lisbon Schools, the Children’s March “A Voz do Operário”, the Marcha dos Mercados and the Marcha Santa Casa.

In the great parade on the night of Santo António, which saw the usual participation of recent and official couples from Santo António, all the Marches sang “O Tejo Afinal” – the winning composition of this year’s Grande Marcha de Lisboa competition.
