After the first artistic residency, in March, with the Austrian Andreas Trobollowitsch, the Fontes Sonoras project continues in May with a new residency dedicated to listening and sound creation.
This time, artists Inês Tartaruga Água and Xavier Paes will be responsible for exploring the territory of Aldeia das Fontes, in Leiria, and its unique landscape as a creative source for a new work of sound art.
For around 10 days, the artist duo will reside in the village and dedicate themselves to listening to the place, in dialogue with its landscape and local community, to create a new self-generating sound piece. The artists propose to work with natural elements — such as the flow of the Liz River, the breath of the wind or the movement of the leaves on the trees — in a process of co-creation in which the landscape is more than a setting, also becoming a sound and performative body, whose rhythms and forces determine the execution of the work itself.
The creative process will be based on the idea of “controlled improvisation”, where artists define the parameters — such as tunings, materials and structures — but the execution of the work will be governed by the natural dynamics of the location. For example, the flow and speed of the river will directly influence the rhythm and tempo of the composition, a sound experience that will evolve in an unpredictable and unique way.
In addition to providing artists with the opportunity to experiment and develop new works, the Fontes Sonoras project aims to bring sound art to the Fontes community, expanding the artistic horizon of the village, which is naturally far removed from these practices in its daily life. It is an enriching exchange, where both artists and the community are involved in a creative process that leaves the final result open.
The residency will culminate with a public presentation on May 11, where the public will be invited to experience this new creation by Inês Tartaruga Água and Xavier Paes. It will be an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between humans and the forces of nature, encouraging active listening and providing space for the exploratory creation of new sounds.
Fontes Sonoras is an initiative by Omnichord, curated by Raquel Castro and artistic direction by Gui Garrido. The third residency, which will complete the first edition of Fontes Sonoras, will take place in October this year and will be announced soon.
