Foodstock: Celebrating 12 years of the Refood Movement

“FOODSTOCK” event celebrates 12 years of the Refood Movement. Exhibitions, conferences, solidarity meals, and concerts by Diogo Piçarra, HMB, The Black Mamba, and David Carreira mark the Sustainability, Solidarity, and Inclusion event

The Refood Movement will mark 12 years of service to the community with the organization of the 1st edition of “FOODSTOCK”. The event will take place between April 11th and 19th, at Estufa Fria de Lisboa and between April 20th and 23rd at Pavilhão Carlos Lopes, in Lisbon, and will feature concerts by Diogo Piçarra, HMB, The Black Mamba, and David Carreira, among others, in the “FOODSTOCK live” moments.

The Refood Movement was created in 2011 and today brings together more than 7500 volunteers in a daily process of transforming food waste into nutritious meals, offered to the population in a situation of social and economic fragility.

With the organization of this “FOODSTOCK” – which also includes the 1st Exhibition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Portugal, the Conference “Sobre Viver” and the gastronomic initiative “Uma Mesa para 12 Mil”Refood invites the community to embrace this cause, promoting moments of true sustainability, solidarity and inclusion.

The organization of the FOODSTOCK events will rely on the support and commitment of several institutional partners, who will be presented later this month, at the press conference to reveal the complete lineup of Artists Friends of Refood.

Participation in FOODSTOCK can be done by booking the desired tickets on the event website. Any amount donated in the reservation system will be used to charge the event’s production costs and support the 100% voluntary work of the Refood Movement.

FOODSTOCK – A three-dimensional event

  • Sustainability – First Exhibition of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Portugal, taking place at Estufa Fria de Lisboa between the 11th and 19th of April. It will be the starting point for the “Sobre Viver” Conference – with the participation of leading guests who will allow for reflection and sharing of knowledge about the challenges of the SDGs – at the Carlos Lopes Pavilion on April 21, 22, and 23.
  • Solidarity – The “One Table for 12 Thousand” initiative brings to light the value of rescued food that cannot be wasted. Together with renowned Chefs and other friends of Refood, we will transform food waste into quality meals that will be served by volunteer employees of the partners, between the 21st and 23rd of April. Meals can be consumed in the table space that will exist in the Pavilhão Carlos Lopes and also in a “takeway” regime for social works in Lisbon.
  • Inclusion – Transversal to all FOODSTOCK events: there will be no sales, but donation and volunteering opportunities. To reserve your presence, just go to the FOODSTOCK page on the event’s website and register.

Also noteworthy is FOODSTOCK LIVE – on the nights of April 20th to 23rd, the same Pavilhão Carlos Lopes will vibrate with the music of the best Artists Friends of Refood: DIOGO PIÇARRA, HMB, THE BLACK MAMBA, DAVID CARREIRA, among others.

ABOUT REFOOD

The Refood Movement was born in Lisbon (and in the world) on March 9, 2011, with just one volunteer who, with his bicycle, rescued food leftovers from 30 restaurants in a neighborhood of Lisbon, thus feeding 50 people.

Today, the Movement has 7500 volunteers, rescuing surplus food from 1800 partners, in 64 communities in Portugal (+ 2 in Spain) ensuring healthy food for 8000 beneficiaries.

Currently, more than 2,500,000 meals are rescued and donated, on average, every year, which makes it possible to avoid more than 1,250 tons of waste per year that would otherwise contribute to degrading our environment.

The Refood Movement completes its first 12 years of service on the 9th of March and challenges everyone to participate in its 100% voluntary work against food waste and hunger, in favor of a more sustainable, solidary and inclusive community – with only two hours a week, anyone can change the world around their own community. This is a good occasion for everyone to join Refood and transform food waste into nutrition for those who need it most.

Impact: The daily work of the Refood Movement touches directly and indirectly on nine of the Sustainable Development Goals (1, 2, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, and 17).
