The project for European universities includes the participation of polytechnics from Porto, Setúbal, Leiria and Cávado and Ave.
The Portuguese institutes now selected will join the first 17 alliances of higher education institutions selected in 2019.
The initiative represents a strengthening of the role of Universities of Applied Sciences or Polytechnic Universities in the European context, with emphasis on the E3UDRESs and RUN-EU consortia in the Portuguese case.
The project to create a European Education Area will allow to deepen the cooperation between institutions, students and teams and to group physical and online resources, courses, knowledge, data and infrastructure.
The European Commission proposed the European universities’ initiative to European Union leaders before the Gothenburg Social Summit in November 2017 as part of an overview for the creation of a European Education Area by 2025. The initiative was approved by the Council European in December 2017, which called for the emergence of at least 20 European universities by 2024.
The concept of European universities was developed under the guidance of the European Commission, in cooperation with member states, higher education institutions and student organizations.
