Four Portuguese win European research grants of 8 million
Four Portuguese researchers, three of whom are working in Portugal, are among the 291 winners of the 2018 Consolidation Grants competition, and will receive more than 8 million euros, announced today the European Research Council.
A-FRO, by Marta Moita (Champalimaud Foundation), VINCULUM by Maria de Lurdes Rosa (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), METAmorphoses by António Ambrósio (Iberian International Nanotechnology Laboratory) and ProteoNE_dynamics by Pedro Carvalho (Oxford University, United Kingdom) were the projects of Portuguese researchers selected by the European Research Council (ERC).
The national researchers, who were selected among 2,389 candidates, will receive about 8.3 million euros out of a total of 573 million.
“It is with great enthusiasm that I have seen the latest results of the Portuguese researchers. These four researchers now awarded are yet another proof of the quality of Portuguese scientists, both at home and abroad, to compete at the highest level.” European Commissioner Carlos Moedas.
The head of the EU Research and Innovation Program Horizon 2020 also considered that these fellowships are incentives for excellence research in Europe and allow European researchers to take risks and develop their ideas.
“There are altogether 40 different nationalities in 22 European countries, which demonstrates the diversity and quality of fundamental research in Europe,” he said.
These fellowships award researchers of any age or nationality, with seven to twelve years of experience after their PhD and in all scientific areas.
The research in question must be conducted in a public or private institution in one of the Member States of the European Union or one of the associated countries. Funding (an average of € 2 million per scholarship) is awarded over a period of up to five years and covers the hiring of research team members.
The competition for the next round of funding for the European Research Council’s fellowship grants ends on 7 February 2019.
