Francisco Ordonhas reached this Sunday, 3rd place in the Pro Júnior de La Torche, in France. The penultimate stage of the Pro Junior European circuit also saw Maria Salgado, just 15 years old, take 5th place in the women’s event.
The two youngsters were the best national representatives in the French competition, in what was their first major international result.
After a Saturday of great potential waves in which the two young Portuguese stood out over several rounds, this Sunday’s luck was different for both. The action resumed with the women’s quarter-finals, where Maria Salgado even led heat 3, but ended up seeing the triumph fall to Frenchwoman Sarah Leiceaga.
Despite the defeat in the quarter-finals, the young surfer from Santa Cruz, only 15 years old, managed an honorable performance, in what is her debut season at the Junior Pro Junior. A result that allowed him to climb to 12th place in the European ranking.
Then, it was time for the men’s semi-finals to go to the water, with Francisco Ordonhas facing Spaniard Kai Odriozola in heat 2. With 12.37 points, Ordonhas could not counter Odriozola’s 16.13, saying goodbye to La Torche in an honorable 3rd place. Something that pushed the young Portuguese surfer, only 17 years old, to the 7th position of the male ranking.
With Francisco Ordonhas in 7th place in the male ranking and Gabriela Dinis in 9th place in the female ranking, the young Portuguese armada leaves for the final stage of the Pro Junior European circuit relatively far from the top places, which will give access to the Junior World Cup from WSL.
The last stage of the circuit takes place in October, in the Azores. It is there that the junior European champions will be decided, with the Basques Bitor Garitaonandia and Janira Gonzalez Etxabarri at the top of the respective rankings. This is after the triumphs of Frenchman Nicolas Paulet and Basque Annette Gonzalez Etxabarri in the La Torche stage have shuffled the rankings.
