Frankie Chavez at Village Underground Lisboa

Throughout the month of October, Village Underground Lisboa receives DJ sets and concerts from Thursday to Sunday, after Rastronaut on October 24, it was Frankie Chavez’s turn to perform for the first time at Village Underground Lisboa, on his “I don’t belongtour, last Sunday, the 25th.

Me and the guitar, a loop station, and being able to play the themes as I get it at the time. Of course, the song structures are there, but if I feel like prolonging a solo or changing an intro I want to be free to do it. The fact that I am without a network and that I challenge myself to live, with the possibility of error on the side, moves me. It is more urgent and takes things to a limit that makes the experience more intense”, confessed Frankie Chavez.

The intimate concert started at 6 pm, with the doors opening at 5 pm, at Villa Underground Lisboa.

Frankie Chavez is one of the most promising talents of new Portuguese music, having been referred to as the most recent blues revelation in Southern Europe. His music combines different types of sounds, resulting in a Blues/Folk composed of clean environments and others that are more raw and psychedelic. Despite identifying different musical influences such as Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Kelly Joe Phelps, Ry Cooder, it is difficult to find a single term to define his music, which guarantees him a unique and unmistakable style.

Being a multi-instrumentalist, Frankie Chavez uses several guitars with different tunings, improvised drums, and several effects pedals. By superimposing layers of guitar phrases through a loop station, it creates a corpulent but breathy sound, where nothing is done at random. When he sings, he creates a closeness to the audience due to his intimate tone and the personal nature of his lyrics.

Village Underground Lisboa is a cultural and coworking space for the creative industries, it was built with maritime containers and two old buses and is located on the Passeio Maritimo next to Alcântara. It is part of an international platform that emerged on the Londrina artistic scene in 2007, having arrived in Lisbon in 2014.
