These shows by Fred Martins and Marcos Suzano, on June 5th in Lisbon, and on June 6th in Beja, mark the launch in Portugal of the album “Barbarizando Geral” (Biscoito Fino Recording Company), recorded simultaneously in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, and released at the end of 2024.
The songs on Barbarizado Geral are aligned with the musicality of Afro-Brazilian batuques, and much of the repertoire addresses current sensitive issues, such as the environmental and civilizational crises. This includes the samba that gives the album its name, “Barbarizando Geral”, as well as “Senzala”, “Dois Chicos” (a tribute to Chico Buarque and Pope Francis) and “O Rancho da Seita Suicida” (about the danger of scientific denialism as a political practice).
There is also room for the celebration of life in songs of love and epiphany, such as “Esse Amor Tem Nome”, “Abalou”, and “Trama”. Fred and Suzano also bring the already renowned songs by Fred Martins, “Flores”, “Novamente”, “Colibri” and “Tempo Afora”, the unreleased “Adeus” (Fred/Diniz) and classic songs by Portuguese composers such as Zeca Afonso in “Vejam Bem” and “Traz outro Amigo Também”. All the songs on the album Barbarizando Geral were composed by Fred Martins alone or with partners such as Roberto Bozzetti, Marcelo Diniz, Manoel Gomes and André Sampaio. Fred also signed the drawings that appear on the album cover and that were animated to compose the show’s scenography.
The talent and vast experience of Fred Martins and Marcos Suzano guarantee this show a repertoire of fine craftsmanship packaged in a creative dialogue between percussion, voice and guitar.
With the show Barbarizando Geral, Fred Martins and Marcos Suzano intend to bring the Brazilian public an intriguing show, full of critical joy and high artistic quality.
Fred Martins
A notable singer, instrumentalist and composer from Rio de Janeiro (who has lived between Portugal and Spain for 15 years), Fred Martins developed his career influenced by bossa nova, samba and MPB. He deepened his relationship with Brazilian music by transcribing scores by MPB masters for the famous songbooks of Almir Chediak. Fred Martins’ talent was recognised when, at the Visa Brazilian Music Awards, he received the top prize from the jury, unanimously, and also won by popular vote.
His compositions have been performed by names such as Ney Matogrosso, Adriana Calcanhotto, Zélia Duncan, Maria Rita, José Miguel Wisnik and MPB4, among others. In Portugal, the singer Joana Amendoeira released an album dedicated to the songs of Fred Martins, in partnership with the Portuguese poet Tiago Torres da Silva. His songs are also featured on the soundtracks of TV Globo soap operas, such as the song Depressa a vida passa, featured in the Brazilian soap opera Órfãos da Terra.
His discography includes the albums Janelas (2001), followed by Raro e Comum (2005), Tempo Afora (2008) and Guanabara (2009). In 2011, he also recorded Acrobata, in a duo with Ugia Pedreira, in Galicia, and, more recently, in 2016, he released the album Além do Muro do Meu Quintal; in 2021 he released Ultramarino, which has as its guiding thread the artist’s musical base of bossa nova lineage from Rio de Janeiro, and also moves through blues and sounds of Moorish (Arabic) influence, reaffirming the musical connection between Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and Brazil.
Another important work he has developed is the duo with cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, with whom he has performed numerous times at festivals throughout Europe.
Marcos Suzano
Musician and percussionist born in Rio de Janeiro, he has been a professional musician since 1986. He has participated in several important groups on the Brazilian and international music scene, which has made him one of the most sought-after musicians, both for concerts and recordings.
His research into electronic music is combined with a deep knowledge of the Afro-Brazilian musical base, resulting in an action marked by virtuosity and originality, in favour of a signature. His ideas for renewing Brazilian percussion are conveyed in festivals, classes and workshops held around the world.
He has a video lesson released in Japan and 2 DVDs, the latter being the most complete, released in 2008 in Germany and throughout Europe, where he presents his tambourine technique in great detail.
