Funchal honors José Saramago at the Book Fair
The writer’s daughter, Violante Saramago Matos, will be the curator of the fair and will participate in the debate with Pilar del Rio and Carlos Reis, responsible for the centenary celebrations, which will be celebrated in 2022.
José Saramago (1922 – 2010) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998 and also received the Camões Prize in 1995, the most important awarded to Portuguese-speaking writers.
The “Essay on Blindness” and “The Cave” were the books chosen to symbolize the donation, because, as he stressed, they continue to translate the current state of the world.
The Funchal City Council plans to invest 80 thousand euros in the organization of the Book Fair, which this year returns to the traditional molds, on Avenida Arriaga, in the city center, with the Municipal Theater Baltazar Dias serving as a stage for parallel events.
