Serralves Foundation opens the exhibition “Espaço para o Corpo” which brings together works by Portuguese and international artists

The Serralves Foundation inaugurates, at Caves Ferreira, in Vila Nova de Gaia, the exhibition “Espaço para o Corpo” which brings together works by Portuguese and international artists.

The collective exhibition “Espaço para o corpo” presents a set of works by Portuguese and international artists who problematize the body as a creative and perceptive agent, exploring its relationship with space and time, with movement and absence, with architecture and intimacy.

The exhibition takes as its starting point the particular nature of the spaces of Caves Ferreira and its impact as a sensory experience, accommodating itself to the gloom that reigns inside, to the rhythm of shapes and shadows that repeat themselves, to the expansion and contraction of the spaces covered. . Inspired by the legacy of the iconic figure of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, this exhibition focuses on the work of women artists who contribute to deepening a reflection on space and the body and to contesting its limits, exploring, on the one hand, the contours formal, phenomenological and conceptual aspects of this theme, on the other hand, its personal, social and political implications.

Facing the body as a situation, as a mediator of the world and aggregator of experiences and memories, opens the way for exploring identity issues that permeate the work of different artists represented in the exhibition. The show consists of sculptural works and sound installations that appeal to the senses and movement of the spectator through space and works by artists that erase the boundaries between their body and their practice – an approach that gained greater expression in the 1960s and 70. “Espaço para o corpo”  brings together works from this period to the present day, covering the representative temporal arc of the Serralves Collection.

This exhibition is part of the Serralves Collection’s Itinerant Exhibitions Program, which aims to make the Foundation’s collection accessible to diverse audiences from all regions of the country.
