The future of tourism is debated at an international meeting promoted by the Polytechnic of SetúbalThe research project SHIFT, led by the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS) and with funding from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), promoted tomorrow, February 15, in Lisbon (Holiday Inn Hotel), the event “The Future of Tourism: International Meeting”, which aims to raise debate on different scenarios for the future of tourism, based on the pillars of innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.

Organized into four thematic panels, the meeting, which takes place from 9:30 am, brings together specialists in areas such as Sustainability and Development; Economic and Geopolitical Outlook; Science, Innovation, and Technological Transformation; and Tourism & Hospitality, reserving, at the end of the work, a networking moment. About 60 face-to-face participants are confirmed, with a much higher number estimated online.

The project SHIFT- Sustainability-oriented, Highly interactive, and Innovation-based Framework for Tourism Marketing, running since January 2022, has Teresa Costa, coordinating professor at IPS (Escola Superior de Ciências Empresariais) as its lead researcher, aiming to “bring a new interdisciplinary approach to the challenges that small and medium-sized tourism enterprises (SMEs) face, developing and confirming a new theoretical framework to explain how they can collaboratively reinvent themselves in a post-pandemic world”.

From this model, continues the professor, “a new conceptual and pragmatic structure for tourism marketing will result, oriented towards sustainability, highly interactive and based on innovation, digitally based, which will serve as a springboard for the transformation that tourism urgently needs”.

The SHIFT project brings together a team of researchers from the Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril (ESHTE), Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa (Escola Superior de Comunicação Social), and University of the Algarve (Escola Superior de Gestão, Hospitalidade e Turismo), and aims to partners CiTUR – Center for Research, Development, and Innovation in Tourism and Turismo de Portugal.
