Garry Kasparov, one of the greatest chess champions of all time, with consecutive world titles between 1985 and 2000, recognized as one of the greatest strategists in history and a pioneer in the interaction between artificial intelligence (AI) and humans, is the latest international speaker confirmed for Building The Future 2025.
On February 19, at the Carlos Lopes Pavilion in Lisbon, Kasparov will share his unique perspectives on innovation, strategy, leadership and the impact of collaboration between humans and machines, as part of the event’s central theme: “Empowering Potential: Where AI Meets Human Insight”.
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1963, Kasparov became world chess champion at the age of 22, marking the beginning of a legendary career. Since he retired from professional chess in 2005, Kasparov has devoted himself to activism, education, and strategic analysis. As president of the Human Rights Foundation, she leads global initiatives in defence of individual freedom and democracy.
He has also been an editor at the Wall Street Journal since 1991 and is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Oxford-Martin School, where he explores human-machine collaboration. Additionally, the Kasparov Chess Foundation, promotes education through chess, with programs implemented in schools in various parts of the world, including the USA, Brussels, South Africa, Singapore and Mexico.
Garry Kasparov is much more than a chess champion. His career includes a pioneering role in the interaction between humans and machines, especially in the historic confrontations with IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer, which paved the way for the development of intelligent technologies that shape the present.
“Garry Kasparov challenges us to think outside the box about human-machine collaboration. His vision goes beyond technology, bringing an essential strategic perspective for leaders and innovators who want to be at the forefront of digital transformation,” says Paulo Dias, Chief Transformation iMatch Officer.
Organized by imatch and sponsored by Microsoft, Building The Future is the main Portuguese digital transformation event. Under the theme of 2025, the event will bring together leaders, entrepreneurs, technology professionals and researchers to explore how AI can optimize decisions, drive discoveries and transform societies.
Garry Kasparov’s participation bolsters an already robust program that includes Stephen Attenborough, a pioneer of commercial space exploration and board member of Virgin Unite US.
