Gastão Elias wins on Biella’s challenger 7 debut
Portuguese tennis player Gastão Elias won a triumph, in three sets, on his debut in challenger 7 of Biella, to guarantee qualification for the second round of the Italian tournament.
Gastão Elias, who on Sunday was crowned champion of challenger 4 de Oeiras, needed three partials to beat Italian Flávio Cobolli, 386th in the ATP rankings, by 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4, in two hours and three minutes.
After suffering two breaks and having lost the opening set in just 25 minutes, Gastão Elias, number 253 in the world hierarchy, came into play in the following partial and restored equality on the scoreboard by breaking, on two occasions, the young Italian, 19 years old.
In the third set, the decisive moment of the encounter came in the ninth game, when Elias broke Flávio Cobolli to the eighth ‘break’ point he had and served to seal the triumph, in the fourth match point.
In the next round of the category 80 tournament of the ATP Challenger Tour, the Portuguese tennis player, 30 years old, will measure forces with the winner of the clash between the third seed, the German Daniel Altmaier (145th), and the Danish Holger Rune (291st), number one in the junior world and runner-up in the ‘challenger’ 4 de Oeiras.
