Geosat acquires medium and high resolution satellites for earth observation

GEOSAT – Global Earth Observation Satellites, a Portuguese company formed in early 2021 by OMNIDEA, in partnership with CEiiA and the AIR Center, acquires two Earth Observation satellites, becoming one of the largest satellite operators in Europe.

The satellites belonged to the Canadian group Urthecast, which underwent a restructuring process in late 2020.

With this investment of €20M over 5 years, GEOSAT joins the restricted club of private operators of very high-resolution satellites (submetric) and becomes the first Portuguese company to own and operate Earth Observation satellites, catapulting the national space sector for a new phase in its history and opening up a new range of opportunities associated with the exploration of spatial data, the promotion of applications and downstream services.

Tiago Pardal, CEO of OMNIDEA, highlights the differentiated capacity of the acquired assets, referring that «these satellites will leverage new business opportunities throughout their useful life and pave the way for the creation of a new generation of high resolution satellites focused on the Atlantic and in other Earth Observation markets.

For Miguel Belló, AIR Center CEO, “the entry into operation of GEOSAT will allow Portugal to accelerate the implementation of the national strategy for Space and the Atlantic, reinforcing the value chain for the future Atlantic Constellation and creating new opportunities for all the Portuguese technological and industrial base and the AIR Center network.

During the initial phase of operation, according to Francisco Vilhena da Cunha, the CEO of the new company, GEOSAT will prioritize: «strengthen its position in the global Earth Observation market, strengthen capacity in the operation and image processing a from the teams in Portugal and Spain, and establish partnerships for the creation of a new generation of Earth Observation satellites that will replace the satellites currently in orbit.
