Geraldo Azevedo announces concerts in Lisbon and Porto

One of the great Brazilian singer-songwriters will perform at Casa da Música and Teatro Tivoli on the 6th and 14th of May, respectively, and promises to sing the greatest hits of over 50 years of career.

One of the great Brazilian singer-songwriters, Geraldo Azevedo comes to Portugal for two performances in the country with which he shares many ties. He will perform at Casa da Música in Porto on May 6th and at Teatro Tivoli in Lisbon on the 14th. The production is by Backstage.

“Azevedo is a name of Portuguese origin. The last hats I bought at Casa Azevedo in Portugal, Fernando Pessoa even bought hats there too (laughs). My connection with Portugal is natural and alive. I sang there several times. I participated in a festival of all Portuguese-speaking countries and it was wonderful. I always play in Lisbon and there’s no way not to pass through the city. Still, I’ve played in other places like Tondela, and Porto, among others further inland”, recalls the 78-year-old Brazilian, who last performed in Portugal in 2018 at the “Grande Encontro” project, with Alceu Valença and Elba Ramalho.

In the new concert, Geraldo Azevedo will present a more intimate format, which spans his more than 50-year career since his first hits, such as “Táxi Lunar” (Geraldo Azevedo, Alceu Valença and Zé Ramalho), “Bicho de Sete Cabeças” ( Geraldo Azevedo, Zé Ramalho, and Renato Rocha), and “Caravana”, even songs from his most recent work with Chico César, the show “Violivoz”.

“I really like this format, because I have freedom of repertoire. If I play a romantic song and I see that the public likes it, I’ll put on another one. But if I see that the public wants to dance, I play a forró, that way I see everyone dancing “, explains Geraldo Azevedo.

In each of the concerts, Geraldo Azevedo will have a great encounter ahead of him. In the city of Porto, he has his daughter living there. In Lisbon, he will be able to find an old partner in music and life.

“Portugal increasingly welcomes Brazilians. My daughter lives in Porto. A partner like Alceu (Valença) has a house in Lisbon. I love Portugal. The whole country is very beautiful. A lot of joy to be able to come back”, says the artist from Pernambuco, who sees a clear influence of Portuguese music on Brazilian music”

“Fado has a very strong connection with our music. In the Northeast, we inherited the cirandas, the nau catrineta, which has an accent of Portuguese roots. Even block frevo has a lot of Portuguese with those musical introductions. We see the Portuguese essence in Brazilian musical formation”.
