Great Singers for Today’s Opera

Operafest Lisboa 2023 presents, in partnership with the Centro Cultural de Belém, the show Grandes Cantores para a Ópera de Hoje, as part of the contemporary opera competition Maratona Ópera XXI, this year focusing on emerging singers and the interpretation of opera of our time, in Portuguese, in co-production with MPMP, Movimento Patrimonial pela Música Portuguesa.

The Maratona Ópera XXI competition’s main mission is to project this form of total art into the future, promoting the emergence of new composers, new operas, new creatives, and performers, enhancing the creation of more contemporary opera and bringing it closer to the performers, of today’s public and world.

The challenge is based on an exciting line-up with arias or excerpts from operas from the last decades by Portuguese composers such as Alexandre Delgado, António Chagas Rosa, Francisco Fontes, Nuno Corte-Real, Hugo Ribeiro and Dimitri Andrikopoulos, in a staged show performed by young singers selected, evaluate their skills in interpreting contemporary Portuguese opera, and in particular in the Portuguese language, thus enhancing the strengthening of the tradition of singing in Portuguese and the appropriation, specialization and dissemination of the Portuguese repertoire of contemporary opera by new generations of interpreters. The winners will be awarded the Carlos de Pontes Leça Prize.
