Great names of fado sing Pedro Homem de Mello at the Coliseu Porto Ageas

In the year marking the 120th anniversary of the birth of the Porto poet Pedro Homem de Mello, the Coliseu Porto Ageas presents “Povo Que Cantas – The Poetry of Homem de Mello.”

A concert that celebrates the author of unavoidable fados, immortalized in the voice of Amália Rodrigues, such as “Povo Que Lavas no Rio,” “O Rapaz da Camisola Verde,” “Havemos de ir a Viana,” and “Fria Claridade.” On October 24th, at 21:00, the words of Pedro Homem de Mello will be sung by great names of fado, such as João Braga, Kátia Guerreiro, Maria Ana Bobone, Pedro Moutinho, Ricardo Ribeiro, and Teresa Landeiro.

The concert takes place on October 24th, at 21:00

Born in Porto, Pedro Homem de Mello (1904-1984) is one of the greatest names in Portuguese poetry and marked Presencism, the literary artistic movement of the second phase of Portuguese modernism. Amália Rodrigues immortalized some of his words: he is the author of some of the fados recorded in our collective History. Although his words are known by all, some do not know his authorship.

“Pedro Homem de Mello left a cultural legacy of invaluable worth, which is important to disseminate and celebrate on the great stage of the city where he was born, lived, and passed away,” states Miguel Guedes, President of the Coliseu Porto Ageas. “For the significant place he occupies in the national cultural scene, this rightful homage could only gather, also, some of the most relevant voices of fado, allowing the audience to rediscover, with all emotion, the lyrical and musical strength of the Porto poet.”

Along with the voices of João Braga, Kátia Guerreiro, Maria Ana Bobone, Pedro Moutinho, Ricardo Ribeiro, and Teresinha Landeiro will be the musicians David Ribeiro, Diniz Lavos, Francisco Gaspar, Jaime Santos Jr., and Pedro de Castro.

Pedro Homem de Mello developed an extensive poetic work, with the publication of about 30 titles between the 1930s and the 1970s. He received the Antero de Quental Prize (1939), Ocidente Prize (1964), and the National Poetry Prize in 1972. With a degree in Law, he later dedicated himself to teaching. He was also a journalist and a scholar of popular traditions and national folklore, which he disseminated for years on RTP.

Tickets for the concert “Povo Que Cantas – The Poetry of Homem de Mello” cost between €15 and €20 and are available at Coliseu Porto Ageas, Ticketline, and usual locations. Discounts: 20% for students, seniors over 65 years old, families (+3 members), Friends of the Coliseum, and holders of the Porto Card.
