On March 19, in response to the international appeal of the Fridays For Future movement, the Greve Climática Estudantil calls again for mobilization for climate justice in Portugal.
[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Greve Climática Estudantil (Student Climate Strike) returns to action in the face of all empty promises, from leaders and institutions, demanding a real plan, built by the climate justice movement, by all people, for all people. “2021 is the year to start and recover. Our house is on fire and people on the front line (MAPA) are suffering. In the last year we have been shaken by a new crisis in addition to those we have already faced – economic, migratory, social, and climate – but it’s time to get the fire extinguishers. We can’t afford to wait any longer, when on March 19, 2021, we will have 6 years and 287 days until it is impossible to exceed 1.5ºC of heating in relation to pre-industrial levels“, reads in the movement’s announcement.
In view of the urgency of change, the movement, and all its supporters, rise in a fossil society in order to make the transition to an ecologically and socially just one, which has to take into account both employees in polluting sectors, as well as people that were most shaken by the pandemic crisis.
“We are mobilized because we need a plan to simultaneously recover the climate, public health and the economy for one that has life in the center. So far we have confirmed 18 locations – Alcácer do Sal, Algarve, Aveiro, Bragança, Caldas da Rainha, Coimbra, Entroncamento, Évora, Guimarães, Lamego, Lisbon, Mafra, Montijo, Odemira, Pico, Porto, Setúbal and Viseu – some with physical actions, but all with the online option“.
The activists demand the creation of thousands of jobs for the climate in the key sectors that reduce emissions and the closure of the most polluting infrastructures, guaranteeing the protection and requalification of the works. The solution to the climate crisis also requires the creation of a housing plan; the creation of a national forest and agricultural plan, based on agroecology and permaculture; encouraging incentives for projects beneficial to rural areas and adapting forest areas to current and future climatic conditions; the integration of the study of climate change and ecology in school curricula, among others to be consulted in the manifest.
The Greve Climática Estudantil calls everyone to demand real answers to the great challenge of the present times, taking the necessary hygiene measures to ensure the safety of all participants, in the case of face-to-face actions.
