Guimarães International Guitar Festival with 15 concerts

The fifth Guimarães International Guitar Festival (FIGG) will take place from 18 to 29 December with 15 concerts, 14 masterclasses, an international competition, communications and other activities, the organization said today.

With a total of over two dozen guests, FIGG will feature guitarists, pedagogues and researchers as well as artists representing more than 20 countries from continents such as Europe, Asia and America.

Today, in a press conference at the Vila Flor Cultural Center, the artistic director, Nuno Cachada, pointed out the objective of “keeping Guimarães on the classical guitar route”, highlighting the formative and international aspect of this festival that is a member of the first European platform in the guitar, EuroStrings.

Guimarães is the capital of the classical guitar in December through a festival that began in 2014, at the time almost without supports and with fewer activities, but had immediate adhesion of guitarists and the public, “said Nuno Cachada, mentor of this project that is organized by the Musical Society of Guimarães (SMG) in co-production with A Oficina and with the support of the local municipality.

The FIGG 2018 kicks off on the 18th with a concert by the Portuguese André Madeira in the church of Santo António dos Capuchos, given prominence in the presentation for this being a debut with regard to the stages considered most improbable.

The Slovenian Mak Grgic performs on the 19th, in the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, the same place that hosts the concert of the American Brian Head the next day.

Already the 21 is the debut “EuroStrings Artists concerts” with Julia Trintschuk and Giulia Ballaré, in the Conservatory of Guimarães.

At stake is the fact that FIGG 2018 is included in the European tour of guitar festivals that seeks to promote the training and roaming of young talent.

The performance of at least five “EuroStrings Artists“, which, together, are detectors of more than 70 prizes, is scheduled to take place today, the organization said.

Throughout the 26th there are concerts by Vinícius Perez, Katarzyna Smolarek and Yuki Saito at the Conservatory of Guimarães, adding the one of the French Judicaël Perroy, at 21:00, in the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança.

A 27, Simone Rinaldo, from Italy, also works at the Conservatory of Guimarães and in the evening it is the turn of the Duo Kontaxakis – Ivanovich, to perform at the Minho University auditorium, the last concert being reserved for 29 with Francisco Franco at the Associação Comercial e Industrial of Guimarães.

Throughout the ten days of FIGG, workshops are scheduled, in a program that has the name of “Guitar for All“, as well as the stages of the International Competition “City of Guimarães” and the program of exchange of “EuroStrings Artists” , adding the meeting of partners of this platform that chose Guimarães to hold its annual meeting.

FIGG 2018 has a budget of around 40 thousand euros and is supported by the Municipality of Guimarães and by the European Creative Europe Program.
