Guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa tours US in March

Guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa starts a March tour of the United States with two performances scheduled for the SXSW South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, today.

The guitarist, distinguished by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation with the Best Instrumentalist Award in 2014, will present themes from her debut album, released on October 2016, “as well as some new songs in her own name“, according to a statement from her promoter.

The tour opens March 8 with a recital at the Portuguese embassy in Washington, and the next day it plays at the Millennium Room, the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center, also in the US federal capital, heading for Austin in the state Texas, where he plays on days 12 and 13 at the SXSW South by Southwest Festival (SXSW).

The festival’s poster, which includes lectures, debates, films, new company presentations and several concerts simultaneously, also features in this edition the Portuguese trio Vaarwell, who plans to publish a new EP in February, which will be presented on the stage of SXSW.

Festival of professional reference, SXSW brings together creative industry elements, promoters, record publishers and music agents.

Marta Pereira da Costa’s tour continues on March 14 at the 360 Center Atrium of the Lincoln Center in New York, and on the following day takes the DROM stage, still in New York, ending the tour on the 16th, in the Narrows, in Fall River.

Marta Pereira da Costa, a Portuguese guitar player, said that “the goal was to escape the stigma of fado and give a dimension to the Portuguese guitar, which should not only be fado, given its characteristics, because it has a very loud sound and timbre “.

In May 2017, Marta Pereira da Costa presented the debut album at the Tivoli, in Lisbon, and has performed several performances in Portugal and abroad.

In 2005, the guitarist participated in a show by guitarist Mário Pacheco, which resulted in the CD / DVD ‘A Música e Fado’, nominated by British magazine Songlines as one of the ten best albums of the year.

In 2008, Pereira da Costa participated as a soloist on the CD ‘Fados d’Alma’, by fado singer Rodrigo Costa Félix, and participated in the recording of the theme ‘Pasa’, inserted in the album ‘Unidad de Canciones Intensivas’, in which he participated at the invitation of composer and Spanish producer Jaime Roldán.

In 2011 he returned to participate in a CD by Rodrigo Costa Félix, ‘Fados de Amor’, which, according to information from the Fado Museum, is “the first record in the history of fado in which the Portuguese guitar is played exclusively” and that was honoured with the Amália Award for Best Album in 2012, the year that the guitarist began his solo career, having premiered in Toronto, Canada.
