Hania Rani and Ensemble present Ghosts
May 22, 9pm at Coliseu dos Recreios
The Polish singer and pianist chose Lisbon to perform her latest solo album specially.
Lisbon is one of the cities where “Ensemble” will be performing, the tour that will make a long-held dream of Hania Rani come true: to play her latest album, Ghosts, in its entirety with a large group of musicians, in some of her favourite places in Europe. The composer will take to the iconic stage of Coliseu dos Recreios on May 22, surrounded by nine other artists.
After two concerts in Lisbon and Porto in April last year, which were highly acclaimed by critics, Hania embarks on a tour that summarises the extensive road trip that began in 2023 with a final luminous piece before a well-deserved period of tranquillity.
This show also emerges as a response by the award-winning pianist to an increasingly fragmented world and the progressive deterioration of her ability to focus. She argues that live performance is a rare opportunity to reconnect with her ability to experience things conveyed with a larger gesture and over a longer period. When she returns to Portugal to perform the songs from her third solo album, she does so uniquely and differently from her usual performances, integrating a larger entity with string, wind and brass instruments. At the Coliseu, the interaction between a dozen musicians will be witnessed, most of whom are long-time collaborators and friends of the Polish pianist, such as cellist Dobrawa Czocher and bassist Ziemowit Klimek, with versatile musical backgrounds.
The collective’s performance will also gain new wings with the lighting and scenography design by Stuart Bailes, inspired by the intricate nature of the album, bringing together hundreds of sounds, flavours and stories.
Regarding Ghosts, it’s 70 minutes that bring Hania Rani’s writing and beautiful voice to the forefront, and are seen as a deliberate artistic decision and a manifesto in direct contradiction to the way art tends to be adjusted to the frenetic pace of mass communication. Released in October 2023, the double album features illustrious guest appearances by Patrick Watson, Ólafur Arnalds and Duncan Bellamy (Portico Quartet).
Tickets for the show in Lisbon cost between €35 and €80 and are on sale at the usual venues and BOL.
On May 22, at 9 pm, Hania Rani and her Ensemble invite the audience to slow down and enter an immersive experience that explores acoustic and digital sounds, mixing seemingly distinct worlds that form the musical style and creative trajectory of the singer and pianist.
