Casino Estoril will host, on November 10th, at 10 pm, the Cuban septet Havana Social Club. The prestigious group takes the stage in the Black and Silver Hall to invite the public to listen to Cuban history and tradition illustrated by a sound of multiple emotions that move and rejoice at the same time.
The Habanero septet format group pays tribute to traditional Cuban music from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, which includes artists such as Compay Segundo, Nico Saquito, Los Compadres, Buena Vista Social Club, among others. Through reinterpretations of classics from the Cuban songbook, the group invites the spectator to savor the essence of Cuban culture and the color of Latin Jazz.
A true institution in Cuba, Septeto Habanero, initially called Sexteto Habanero, was created in 1920 and became one of the groups with the most tradition in the country and true ambassadors of the musical genre ‘Són‘, later considered subversive by Gerardo’s Machado dictatorship due to its too African rhythms. Originating from the eastern part of the island, ‘Són’, a fusion of Spanish and African traditions, remains full of vitality and with a clearly marked underlying rhythm that gives it an unmistakable tropical charm.
The unique vocal style, the lyrical metric, and the primacy of the trés (three double-string guitars), derived from the Spanish guitar, transmit a mix of emotions controlled by the Latin rhythmic pulse. Popular dance music of peasants and proletarians, Són is the musical root for many contemporary forms. Initially danced in neighborhoods and dance academies by the popular classes, it became their most suitable and representative means of expression after the First War.
NOTE: The Cuban Government declared the Són National Cultural Heritage in September 2012 and in June 2022 it nominated the musical genre for Unesco Cultural Heritage, the result of which will be known later this year. On May 8th, the Cuban Són is celebrated, also in honor of the musician Miguelito Cuní.
