Hécuba, not Hécuba

Tiago Rodrigues – Comédie-Française

In his first collaboration with the Comédie-Française, Tiago Rodrigues, director of the Avignon Festival, intertwines the story of Hécuba, the widow of Priamo who, with the defeat of Troia, lost her husband, throne and children, with that of an actress who, in our days, he interprets Hekuba of Euripides.

As rehearsals for the show progress, they overlap with a judicial investigation, with the actress herself seeking justice for her autistic son, who has been abused. In a unique and crepuscular scenario, fiction is painfully merged with intimate reality, the tragedy of myth meets that of reality, between the play of theatre and justice.

Playwright and director, Tiago Rodrigues met the Belgian company tgSTAN in 1997 while still a student, an encounter that confirmed his commitment to the collective spirit in theatrical creation. Co-founder, with Magda Bizarro, of the company Mundo Perfeito, in 2003, in Lisbon, since then created about thirty productions in more than twenty countries. Among them are Anthony and Cleopatra based on Shakespeare in 2015, Bovary based on the novel by Gustave Flaubert, The Way She Dies based on Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy with tgSTAN, and On the measure of the impossible, a piece he wrote based on interviews with thirty members of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Doctors without Borders. After directing the National Theatre D. Maria II in Lisbon, from 2015 to 2021, he took over the direction of the Festival d’Avignon in 2023. At the festival, he created La Cerisaie de Chekhov in the Cour d’honneur of the Palais des papes in 2022.

His theatrical work, written in Portuguese and published in French by Les Solitaires Intempestifs, has been translated into nine languages (French, Spanish, Dutch, Estonian, Italian, Romanian, German, Arabic and Korean).
