Hélder Bruno presents Ether Sculptures at TAGV

with Surma, Iuri Oliveira and Jorri (A Jigsaw) and visual design by Ângela Bismarck

On June 13th at 9:30 pm, the stage of the Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente (TAGV) will welcome Hélder Bruno with the show Ether Sculptures, an immersive concert where music reveals itself as invisible matter – sound sculptures molded in the ether.

Inspired by the power of music as a sensory and emotional experience, Hélder Bruno invites us to dive into a universe where each composition evokes images, landscapes and internal narratives. Through a deeply personal and contemporary approach, the composer and pianist proposes a journey through music as an ethereal sculpture, sculpted in the invisible, but felt with intensity.

Ether Sculptures is part of the tradition of programmatic music, in which each piece carries an evocative title and its own identity, suggesting stories that are drawn in the mind of those who listen. The performance explores concepts such as narrative identity, musicality and musicking, revealing a language that is both sound and sensation, both form and emotion.

The show will feature special appearances by Surma, Iuri Oliveira and Jorri (Jigsaw), crossing distinct and complementary musical universes, in a unique moment of artistic encounter. The visual imagery of this concert will be conceived by Ângela Bismarck.

The concert is supported by Antena 2.

Tickets are on sale at BOL and at the TAGV box office.

Who is Helder Bruno?

Hélder Bruno (Coimbra, 1976) is a composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist.

His music breathes between delicacy and intensity, between stillness and the undulation of deep emotions. Inspired by Western classical music, jazz and contemporary languages, he traces a unique path where each composition is a space for the encounter between the past and the future.

He has released two albums of new material: A Presença, Serena e Terna (2018) and Under a Water Sky (2022). The first, a suite of twelve pieces for piano, voice and string quartet, reveals a universe of sensitivity and contemplation. The second, presented at the Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente, among other venues, expands this sound identity, with the collaboration of artists such as Maria João, Sérgio Carolino, O Gajo and Marito Marques. In 2023, Under a Water Sky was honored at the International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA 2023, USA), where it won in the Best World Music Performance category with the song Island.

Hélder Bruno began his studies at the Coimbra Conservatory of Music and deepened his career at the Porto Jazz School, crossing boundaries between classical music, jazz and improvisation. Throughout his career, he has collaborated on several projects, through the orchestration of pieces and creation of soundtracks for dance, theater and film. He has played pianists in multiple groups and has also participated in recordings by other artists. Some of the artists he has worked with over time include Jorge Palma, Né Ladeiras, Nuno Guerreiro, Rodrigo Amado and Cool Train Trio.

On stage, whether solo or accompanied by chamber groups, his shows create immersive atmospheres, where music expands beyond sound and becomes an experience.

In addition to his artistic activities, he is a visiting adjunct professor at ESEC/IPC and a lecturer at STATUS – the Lousã vocational school.

He is a consultant and researcher with published works, including the books Jazz em Portugal (1920-1956) (Almedina, 2006) and “É jazz quando me chegar lágrimas aos olhos” (It’s jazz when tears come to my eyes) by José Duarte (1938-2023) (Cordel D’Prata editions, 2024).
