Hélder Moutinho, Pedro Moutinho and Alexandra confirmed for the Caixa Alfama Festival
Alfama, Lisbon 26th and 27th September
In 2025, the biggest Fado Festival returns on the 26th and 27th of September and will pay tribute to Maria da Fé.
After last year’s edition, for many the best in the festival’s history, Caixa Alfama returns on the 26th and 27th of September for another great celebration of our Fado. During these two days, the entire Alfama neighborhood is invited to celebrate this genre that is so unique to us, in an experience full of beauty and feeling.
After the confirmations of Em Casa D’Amália ao Vivo Celebrates Maria da Fé, Gisela João, Marco Rodrigues and Kátia Guerreiro 25 Years of Career, the program for Palco Caixa is complete with two more unmissable proposals: the brothers Hélder Moutinho and Pedro Moutinho together on stage with the show “Os Poetas Convidados”, and Alexandra.
HELDER MOUTINHO AND PEDRO MOUTINHO / The Guest Poets
Helder Moutinho and Pedro Moutinho are two unavoidable names in Fado. Brothers in life and in Fado, each with a different path, but both with a passionate dedication to this very Portuguese genre. Helder Moutinho, in addition to being a fado singer, is a talented poet and lyricist, known for his intense interpretation and the stories he tells through Fado. Pedro Moutinho, in turn, brings with him the essence of traditional Fado, with an engaging and genuine voice that translates the soul of Lisbon in each interpretation.
At the Caixa Alfama Festival, they go on stage together to pay tribute to the poets of Fado. In traditional Fado, the lyrics are usually written by popular authors. In the second half of the last century, great names in literature emerged who, without having started in this register, ended up being taken to it by fado singers such as Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, João Braga or Beatriz da Conceição. The highlights include David Mourão-Ferreira, Pedro Homem de Melo, Alexandre O’Neill, José Carlos Ary dos Santos and Pedro Tamen.
At the end of the 20th century, in addition to the continuity of traditional authors, others began to write for Fado, coming from genres such as pop, rock or traditional Portuguese music. Others were new literary talents and were invited to contribute to this tradition. Among them are Manuela de Freitas, Maria do Rosario Pedreira, Vasco Graça Moura, Amelia Muge and João Monge. Nowadays, creators dedicated to Fado continue to emerge, some of them fado singers who compose their songs.
In addition to these, there are lyricists invited to enter the “ghetto” of Lisbon song, challenging the conventions of the genre, from the imagery to the theme. But there is an essential detail: in this universe, they are not called lyricists, but Fado Poets or simply poets. In this show, Helder Moutinho and Pedro Moutinho pay tribute to these poets, who have so enriched this heritage. “The Guest Poets” promises to win over the Caixa Alfama audience, in a night full of Fado and poetry. Helder Moutinho and Pedro Moutinho will take to the Caixa Stage on September 26th.
