The premiere of the musical comedy “Company,” directed by and starring Henrique Feist, is scheduled for September 18th at 9:00 PM in the Casino Estoril Auditorium.
The performance cycle of this Stephen Sondheim musical with a libretto by George Furth is renewed, Thursday through Saturday at 9:00 PM, and Sundays at 4:30 PM.
New York, 1970. And it is in the urgent pulse of this city, in the noise, in the lack of time for everything, that our action unfolds – the challenge of maintaining relationships in an increasingly depersonalised society.
Is it better to live single or with someone? That’s the question Robert… or Bobby… asks himself at the surprise party thrown by his best friends for his fiftieth birthday. Bobby has always been a lonely bachelor, surrounded by his “good and crazy” friends—who are married—but until now, he has never taken the plunge.
Fear of commitment? Fear of love? Is it too late to find happiness? Do we gain or lose when we decide to share our lives with someone? Do we stop being who we are to become someone else? Does the “I” become “we”? We can’t escape time, the passing of the years, or the sad feeling that invades us when we realise that our self-imposed loneliness is nothing more than the fear of commitment.
Throughout a series of dinners, first dates, deep conversations, drinks, and other experiences, we witness a range of comical and melancholic moments with the couples closest to him and his three girlfriends. None of them understands the reason for his single status. Bobby reflects on the pros and cons of settling down.
But do these encounters exist, or are they just a memory, a remembrance? Are they a projection of his hopes, fears, frustrations…?
The fear of failure, of disappointment, the need to be loved, to belong to someone… All of this runs through Bobby’s mind, as he just wants to live. Because it’s good to live. And that can only be achieved when we have someone by our side to love, and that makes us feel alive.
Company premiered on Broadway in 1970 and, for 54 years, was the musical with the most Tony Award nominations (Broadway’s Oscar). It has had numerous productions around the world over the years, the most recent being the Spanish version, which ran for two years in Malaga, Madrid, and Barcelona, directed by and starring António Banderas.
This musical now comes to Portugal by Henrique Feist, with special permission from Music Theatre International.
