Sam Mendes’ ‘1917’ films and Quentin Tarantino’s’ Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ‘were the big winners of the 77th edition of the Golden Globes, which brought several surprises at this early morning ceremony in Los Angeles.
The movie ‘1917’ was crowned Golden Globe for Best Drama, beating ‘Joker’, ‘Marriage Story’, ‘The Irish’ and ‘The Two Popes’, an unexpected choice of the Foreign Critics Association in Hollywood. ‘1917’ also gave Sam Mendes the Best Director statuette, in a category where they were also named Martin Scorsese with “The Irishman” and Quentin Tarantino.
Already ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ has confirmed favoritism by winning the globe in the Comedy or Musical category and giving Brad Pitt the award for Best Secondary Actor in Comedy or Musical and Quentin Tarantino for Best Screenplay. Of five nominations the film has won three, the best result among the most nominated titles. Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ gave Joaquin Phoenix the Globe for Best Actor in a dramatic movie and even won the best original soundtrack category, awarding Icelandic songwriter Hildur Guönadóttir.
The list of surprises includes the victory of Laika Entertainment’s animated film ‘Missing Link’, beating Disney’s heavyweights – ‘Frozen 2’, ‘Toy Story 4’ and ‘The Lion King’ – and ‘How to Train the Your Dragon: The Secret World ‘by Universal, which generated a great commotion at the ceremony. Conversely, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ and Al Pacino did not receive any of the Golden Globes among his five nominations.
Also the most nominated film (six), Noah Baumbach’s ‘Marriage Story’, came out of the ceremony with only one statuette, delivered to Laura Dern in the category of Secondary Actress. Both titles are from the Netflix platform, which did not confirm the expectations generated by the high number of nominations it received for this edition of the Golden Globes: out of a total of 17, it won only two.
On television, it was HBO, Hulu and Amazon Prime that dominated. HBO’s ‘Succession’ series took home the most coveted Globe for best drama, and its protagonist Brian Cox, who plays mogul Logan Roy, received the award for best actor in a dramatic series. HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’ was considered the best-limited series, and Stellan Skarsgård beat the globe for a serial actor, limited series or television movie.
In comedy, as with the Emmy Awards in September 2019, Amazon Prime’s ‘Fleabag’ was the best series and Phoebe Waller-Bridge received the Globe for Best Actress in Comedy or Musical. Olivia Colman was honored for her performance on Netflix’s ‘The Crown’, leading the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series, Patricia Arquette was Best Actress Limited by ‘The Act’ (Hulu) and Renée Zellweger Best Actress in a Dramatic Movie, by ‘Judy’.
Among the titles that didn’t get any figurines are ‘The Two Popes’, ‘Knives Out’ and ‘The Marvelous Ms. Maisel’. South Korean Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasites’ won in the Foreign Language Film category as expected.
