HMB and Matay at Lisboa ao Palco
The program of Lisboa ao Palco was designed by guitarist Diogo Clemente for an audience limited to 600 seats.
From the 11th of September to the 4th of October, Quinta da Alfarrobeira, in São Domingos de Benfica, Lisbon, hosts 10 nights of Portuguese music, bringing together renowned and rising names of the national music industry for 20 shows. The enclosure will have a capacity reserved for about 600 seats complying with all the rules of social distance, hygiene, and safety set by the General Directorate of Health. Tickets are on sale for a single price of 15€.
Lisboa ao Palco started on September 11 with the concerts of Joana Espadinha, and David Fonseca, and since then lots of big names took the stage of Quinta da Alfarrobeira, like António Zambujo, Buba Espinho, GNR, Cordel, Moonspell and Murais. Friday, September 25th, was the turn of HMB and Matay to take the stage.
Rúben Matay Leal de Sousa aka Matay, was born in 1986 in Cape Verde, graduated in socio-cultural animation, and currently works at Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon as a promoter in the context of youth social insertion, working with young people from Boavista neighborhood.
Throughout his career he took part in several musical projects, many of them focused on gospel and soul music, having thus participated in the Soul Gospel Project and the Gospel Collective. In addition to these projects, he also made choirs at Ana Semedo‘s concerts and is a regular presence at Dengaz concerts as a member of the choir.
His first success was the theme “Dizer Que Não“, of 2015, where he collaborates with Dengaz and then the single “O Que Tu Dás“, theme that was part of the soundtrack of the telenovela “A Herdeira“, from TV channel TVI, and which already has over 11 million views. Matay also participated in the Festival da Canção 2019 with the theme “Perfeito“, lyrics by Boss AC and music by Tiago Machado.
The concert at the Lisboa ao Palco festival started around 8:45 pm, and Matay was accompanied on stage by his band composed by Eugénia Contente on the guitar, Nuno Louro Rodrigues on the keyboard, Francisco Cardoso on the bass, Kae Santos on the drums, and Lá-La and Luisa Dantier in the choir.
At the concert we heard songs such as “Dizer que não“, “O Que Tu Dás“, “Perfeito” with the special participation of Tiago Machado on the keyboard, “Não Chores Mais” and “Voltar Atrás” with the special guest Estraca.

HMB are one of the most recognized bands in Portugal, they were nominated for the Best Portuguese Act award, in the 2014, 2016 and 2017 edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards, won the Best Music award in the 2017 edition of the Golden Globes, with the theme “O Amor É Assim“, as well as the Best Group award in the 2018 edition of the Golden Globes.
The album “Melodramatico” is the fourth album by HMB and marks the band’s return in 2020. This latest album was born from the “extreme need to take risks. Classic stories in the genesis of songs that found translation in a contemporary sound. disco transports us overnight“. This project contains the participation of luxury guests such as Dino D’Santiago, Papillon and Inês Castel-Branco.
The concert started around 10 pm and we heard themes like “Piri-piri na Língua“, “Melodramatico“, “Perder Tempo“, and “Feeling“.

Quinta da Alfarrobeira is an emblematic place. When João Frederico Ludovice designed, built, and inhabited this farm, from 1748 onwards, he would never have imagined that, about three centuries later, it would become a space that aims to bring together and bring citizens closer to local power, giving form political, social and cultural intervention that is much more direct and closer to people: here you can attend classes at the São Domingos Academy or attend cultural events, such as Lisboa ao Palco, which marks the musical rental in Lisbon, within the normality possible in this period of pandemic, while everyone, artists and public, await the day when the shows will return to full function.
The cycle is an initiative of CM Lisboa and EGEAC, with the support of the São Domingos de Benfica Parish Council, produced by Sons em Trânsito and Tejo Music Lab, with the aim of signaling this return to the stage as well as celebrating the richness and diversity of Portuguese music. Diogo Clemente was in charge of programming.
