Homage to Rogério Paulo and Fernanda Neves

The Teatro Experimental de Cascais honors the actors Rogério Paulo and Fernanda Neves on the occasion of the 25th of April.

The Teatro Experimental de Cascais is about to complete 58 years of existence and remains active in its objectives. The most outstanding figures of Portuguese culture have passed through this company, as interpreters, or great figures in the visual arts and music.

Thus, and within the humanist spirit of the company, tributes will be paid to Rogério Paulo and Fernanda Neves, performers who were part of the course of the Teatro Experimental de Cascais.

The tribute to the two personalities will be held at the end of the stage show “The Night of the Assassins”, by the Cuban playwright José Triana. In 1970 this show, with the performers Maria do Céu Guerra, Sinde Filipe, and Manuel de Freitas, staged by Jorge Listopad, was banned by censorship on the eve of the premiere, with some sessions held clandestinely, behind closed doors.

For freedom to reach the theater in 1974, Rogério Paulo and Fernanda Neves contributed a lot.
The mythical actor, with a career as a performer, director, and mentor of numerous theatrical projects, not only in Portugal but abroad, was detained several times by the political police. Rogério Paulo died, precisely on April 25, 1993.

Also, Fernanda Neves was detained for more than a year in the prison of Caxias, for fighting for the end of the dictatorship in Portugal. In the television documentary about the release of prisoners in Caxias, on April 26, 1974, the moment Fernanda Neves left, along with other anti-fascists, is well recognizable.
The plaques – memory will mark her presence at the Teatro Experimental de Cascais and will be a contribution to the future memory that the two performers fought for freedom.

They will remain next to the homage paid to Miep Giep, a legendary figure in the tragedy that killed the Frank family during the Nazi regime, and who was in Portugal, at this same Theatre, in 1994.

April 25th, at 21:00, at Teatro Municipal Mirita Casimiro after the show “A Noite dos Assassinos”

A NOITE DOS ASSASSINOS
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, TEC begins the year with a cycle of texts prohibited by censorship, with A NOITE DOS ASSASSINOS, by José Triana, a revolutionary text that TEC produced in 1973, staged by Jorge Listopad and which did not get to go to the scene, for the prohibition on the day of the general rehearsal. It will be a way of honoring the performers of the time: Maria do Céu Guerra, Manuela de Freitas, and Sinde Filipe, as well as director Jorge Listopad, as well as all the artists who had to remain silent in the face of censorship.

An important work by Cuban playwright José Triana, the story goes back to 1950, in Cuba, before the 1959 Revolution, when three brothers, Cuca, Beba, and Lalo, meet in the attic of their house to stage the murder of their own parents. At first reading, we are faced with a dramatic metaphor of the climate experienced in that country, focused on the generational conflict between parents and children, specifically in relation to their educational values and their revolt, outlining a complex relationship between siblings. For TEC, this metaphor is more deeply connected to more universal and current contexts, where in an unstable and chaotic world, three brothers fight for their survival close in a space, through representational games: improvisation, rehearsal, or a representation of what has already been done? In this violent metatheatrical game of make-believe, mortal and symbolic, there is no love between parents and children, events are relived in an endless mirror and nothing is what it seems.

TEC’s core team will be at the forefront of the creation of this show, with all the experience and mutual knowledge, and invited three actors with great public recognition: Elmano Sancho (in a continuation of the collaboration with TEC), Teresa Coutinho (for the first time at TEC ) and Lia Carvalho (who left the Professional Theater School of Cascais several years ago, and who will make her debut in Cascais in this show).
