HYENA invites the audience to reflect on the nature of evil and its ability to manifest itself in Man when he is left to his own devices, without rules or laws.
Through the circus and physical theatre, the show explores the construction of morality through the social dynamics and relationships of the characters, encompassing social and ethical aspects.
INAC (National Institute of Circus Arts) premieres on May 31, at Parque do Ribeiro do Matadouro, in Santo Tirso, at 6 pm, the contemporary circus show Hyena, which seeks to explore the interactions of the characters, social dynamics and their different manifestations of evil, whether in the form of individual or collective actions, encompassing social, political and ethical aspects, as well as the complexity of social and hierarchical relationships.
In a dystopian and sarcastic universe, HYENA emerges, a show that reveals the fragility of human morality when faced with the absence of external control and supervision. Concerning William Golding’s book “Lord of the Flies”, the play constructs a metaphor about the ephemerality of civilisation and the brutality inherent to human beings.
The narrative unfolds in a playground in a setting that refers to a post-apocalyptic era without laws or rules, in an imaginary universe that represents not only physical death, but also the death of humanity, the decadence of its values and the social construction of morality. Abstractly, the playground in the show ends up symbolising civilisation as a metaphor for a vulnerable social construction when ethical and moral supervision is lost.
It is worth noting that Hyena includes professionals with disabilities in its cast and intends for this to be a fundamental action to combat ableism, prejudice against people with disabilities, by demonstrating, in practice, that these professionals are fully capable of carrying out creative activities with quality, sensitivity and professionalism. When they occupy spaces of visibility, such as the artistic world, these people not only break down socially imposed barriers but also act as agents of cultural transformation, educating the public and challenging prejudiced mentalities. This representation goes beyond the stage: it directly contributes to a change in collective perception, positively impacting other areas of society, such as education and the job market, by encouraging more inclusive and accessible policies. The presence of people with disabilities in the artistic cast also allows human diversity to be portrayed in a realistic and dignified way, which promotes empathy, understanding and respect for differences, helping to build a more just and plural society.
