The film by Portuguese director João Gonzalez, won the Annie award, known as the ‘Oscar of animation’ in the category of Best Short Film, “Pinocchio de Guillermo del Toro”, from Netflix received the award for Best Film.
The 50th Annie awards ceremony, which took place last night in Los Angeles, California, awarded the film “Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro” in the categories of Best Character Animation, Best Direction, Best Music and Best Production Design.
The Portuguese film that won the Best Short Film category, “Ice Merchants”, was in competition for Best Short Film, “Amok“, by the Hungarian Balázs Turai, “Black Slide“, by the Israeli Uri Lotan, “Love, Dad“, by Czech Diana Cam Van Nguyen, and “The Flying Sailor“, by Canadians Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby.
“Ice Merchants” by João Gonzalez is also nominated for the best animated short film category at the Oscars, a ceremony that takes place on March 12, in what is the first nomination for a Portuguese production.
This co-production by Cola Animation with the United Kingdom and France, is the third film by João Gonzalez and is about loss and family ties, between a father and a son, and has as its starting point the image of a house on a mountain, leaning over a precipice.
The film has already been awarded at Cannes, where it premiered and you can see it in Portuguese cinemas, where it is currently showing.
