“Il Trovatore”, by Verdi, on Portuguese stages in October
Il Trovatore, by Giuseppe Verdi, on stage on October 12 at the Águeda Arts Center, October 13 at Estoril Casino, October 14 at Coliseu Porto Ageas, and finally on October 15 at Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon.
Premiered in 1853, Il Trovatore is the second opera of the Verdian Popular Trilogy, alongside Rigoletto and La Traviata.
A four-act opera, based on the novel by António Garcia Gutiérrez, Il Trovatore tells the story of the gypsy Azucena, who, driven mad by the death of her mother, who was burned for witchcraft, makes the mistake of throwing her child into the fire instead of the count’s child who condemned her mother to the stake. The protagonist, Manrico, a typically romantic hero, considers himself Azucena’s son and is in love with Leonora, a lady of the court, who reciprocates his feelings. His opponent is Count di Luna, who is powerful, cruel, and rejected by Leonora.
