The José Manuel Figueiredo Cultural Forum receives, on October 22, at 9:30 pm, the dance show “Inverno”, by the Companhia de Dança de Almada, created by Bruno Duarte.
“Since I was a child, I have been very present with the images that, fascinated, I watched on television and that made me aware of the winter customs of Trás-os-Montes – grimaces, rattles, devils, figures that always exerted a special magnetism on me. I saw in the creation of this show an opportunity to scenically explore the intersection of the ritual sacredness of these ancestral celebrations, with a contemporary dance language. Situated between the sacred and the pagan, ancestral and contemporary, human and supernatural, “Winter” seeks to convey the magic that lives in these places at the height of the winter solstice, portraying the pulse of the earth, the emancipation of young people, the streets, the posture of transgression – but so ruled by fixed practices – and a strong cultural mysticism. This is a work about what is alive, but also about memory. About that and those who have already lived in the places we experience today.” Bruno Duarte.
“These are youth rituals, full of life and future, through which all the activities of the peoples permeate (…), rituals that every year renew the confidence in the continuity of life, well symbolized in fire and other pagan gods.
We will never sufficiently emphasize the role that rituals (…) played in the evolution of our societies and transmitted to them a character of ethical sanity that manages to maintain dignity in the midst of the greatest poverty and endless difficulties.” Amadeu Ferreira, in “The Devil and the Ashes” (2013).
