Ivan Domingues signs with Van Amersfoort Racing and will compete in the F3 World Championship in 2025

A young driver from Leiria will be the first Portuguese, 12 years after António Félix da Costa, to compete fully in the FIA ​​Formula 3 Championship; The competition begins in March, at the Australian Grand Prix, and is another step towards the dream of rising to the top category of motorsport.

Ivan Domingues, an 18-year-old Portuguese driver, has signed a contract with the prestigious Dutch team, Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR), to fully compete in the 2025 FIA Formula 3 Championship season. The youngster from Leiria begins the official season in Australia (14 to 16 March) and will be the first Portuguese to fully compete in the Formula 3 World Championship, 12 years after António Félix da Costa completed his final season, in what is one of the main stages of access to Formula 1.

“I want to thank VAR and the entire structure for their trust and support. I will do my best to meet the team’s expectations, while seeking to be another ambassador for our country and, above all, to honour the national talent that has always fought hard to achieve the highest level in motorsports. I truly believe that there we can, and deserve to, be among the best”, begins Ivan Domingues. “I aim to race under the Portuguese flag in the Formula 1 World Championship. I know I have a big challenge, but I am also facing a great opportunity, which we will try to seize with all our strength and professionalism, to take another safe step forward. , towards Formula 2 and then Formula 1”, he says.

Ivan is already part of our family, since participating in F4 and Formula Regional Europe. He has demonstrated great results and determination, and we are confident he will be a fantastic addition to our team. We are very excited to work together, to continue achieving good results on the track and to be part of its development”, says the team manager who last season already welcomed the Portuguese driver in the Formula Regional Europe by Alpine, with Ivan Domingues managing to be the best rookie in three races and achieve two podiums.

The official presentation of the VAR team will take place next week. Subsequently, Ivan Domingues will debut the new single-seater in an official test session scheduled for Barcelona, ​​from February 19 to 21. “It will be the first contact with a new car, which according to the new specifications receives changes mainly in the tyres and the aerodynamic package, to enhance greater proximity and overtaking opportunities, somewhat in the image of what is intended for Formula 1”, predicts the young pilot. “Until then, I will remain 100% focused on my preparation, which involves twice-daily physical and simulator sessions. All the planning for the new season was done to create a support structure and a professional routine that will allow me to present myself in the best possible way as soon as I have the opportunity to start testing”, concludes Ivan Domingues.

The FIA ​​Formula 3 World Championship kicks off in March at the Australian Grand Prix (Melbourne, 14-16 March) and follows the Formula 1 ‘circus’ in a total of ten Grands Prix Bahrain – Sakhir; Itália – Ímola; Mónaco – Monte Carlo, Espanha – Barcelona; Áustria – Splielberg; Grã-Bretanha – Silverstone; Bélgica – Spa Francorchamps; Hungria – Budapeste; e Itália – Monza); Each weekend offers two races, with the particularity that the second one starts with the top 12 on the starting grid in reverse positions.

Ivan Domingues (Leiria, 5/5/2006) started karting, inspired by his father and brother, when he was just 8 years old. At the age of 9, he participated in the first Portuguese championship. He won the Portuguese Kart Cup and was National Vice-Champion in 2017, 2018 and 2019. At the age of 14, he moved to Italy to professionalize his training and make the leap to Formula 4. Last season, in 2024, already in FRECA (Formula Regional Europe by Alpine), stood out as one of the best rookies (two podiums and the best rookie in 3 races).
