The 14th edition of the project “Art Has Arrived at Colombo” brings the exhibition “CARRY ME – 100 Years of Bags” to Portugal. This show, which has travelled to various museums around the world and came directly from the prestigious Ostergötlands Museum in Sweden for its debut in Portugal, was inaugurated this week and is present in the Central Square of Colombo, on Floor 0, until October 25. Entry is free, and there will also be two dates each month for free guided tours.

In a structure similar to that of an art gallery, the history of bags is narrated, from 1920 to the present day, through samples from luxury brands – such as Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Hermès, Jacquemus, Prada, and Whiting & Davis – that showcase the evolution of their design, as well as the personalities that popularize their use, making them iconic.

Organized by Centro Colombo in collaboration with Expona – Museum Exhibition Network, “CARRY ME” offers a detailed vision of the evolution of bags over the past 100 years, where visitors will have the opportunity to follow the chronology of bags, from their functional origins to becoming status symbols of fashion icons in the 20th and 21st centuries, across four sections.

Among the iconic examples that marked each decade are, for example, the “Kelly” bag by Hermès, popularized by Grace Kelly, and the “Chanel 2.55,” a symbol of timeless elegance. In addition to classic pieces, the exhibition highlights innovations such as the Fendi Baguette, a landmark of the ‘It-bags’ of the 90s, and the Chiquito by Jacquemus, a recent trend that reimagines the functionality of contemporary bags.

In addition to being freely viewed every day from 10:00 AM to midnight, the first guided tour of “CARRY ME – 100 Years of Bags” is scheduled for this Sunday, September 15, at 11:00 AM, limited to 20 participants. To have this experience, registration is only required on the Centro’s website, where each person can reserve up to four slots. The next one takes place this month on the 28th, Saturday, at the same time. In October, also at 11:00 AM, guided tours will take place on the 13th and 25th.

With a maximum duration of one hour, these tours are conducted by Fabrícia Valente, who, among other projects, developed the artistic curation of the exhibition “Amor Veneris” and works in Cultural Mediation at MAAT, at the Berardo Collection Museum, at CCB, and at State of the Art (SOTA), totaling over 200 collaborations in exhibitions with various other museums and entities.
