Jazz singer Beatriz Nunes opens the 9th edition of the Setúbal Music Festival on May 23, in a joint show with musicians from the Regional Conservatory of Setúbal and Children’s Choir of Setúbal, was announced today.
Presented as a versatile singer in light music, lyric singing and jazz, where she is best known, Beatriz Nunes opens what is considered one of the most inclusive music festivals, at the concert that starts at 9:00 pm on May 23 in the Luísa Todi Forum.
“We started nine years ago with this principle of promoting social inclusion,” said the director of the Setúbal Festival, Ian Ritchie, at the presentation press conference of the 9th edition, which runs from May 23 to 27 in the city of Setúbal.
Ian Ritchie also highlighted the work done by some students who participated in the collection of memories with institutions of support to the elderly in Setúbal and Azeitão, which allowed to create new songs, convinced that this effort will provide “moving and memorable moments“.
In the tradition established by previous editions, the Setúbal Music Festival, once again, inspired by the theme ‘Home’, will count on the presence of musicians and artists recognized internationally, who will share the stage with young people from the region.
The performances of maestro Paulo Lourenço, of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, with maestro Joana Carneiro, from Camerata do Festival, directed by André Gaio Pereira, winner of the Young Musicians 2017 Prize, trombonist John Kenny and trumpet player Torbjorn Hultmark, as well as the singer and composer Merit Ariane and Ensemble Youth of Setúbal, are other highlights of the festival that this year will mobilize more than 1,500 children and young people from all over the council of Setúbal.
In this 9th edition, the organization also highlights the second International Symposium on Music, Health and Welfare, now extended to two days of presentations and talks with national and international experts.
At the press conference presenting the Setúbal Music Festival, held today at the Michel Giacometti Labor Museum, Mayor Maria das Dores Meira emphasized the involvement of dozens of schools and institutions throughout the county, and admitted that the budget for this year’s edition could exceed 200 thousand euros, accounting for all the logistical support and involvement of various city departments.
Maria das Dores Meira also noted that, in addition to the support of the municipality, the Setúbal Music Festival also has financial support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and The Helen Hamlyn Trust Foundation.
