Joana Vasconcelos among pop art icons at the Cerveira museum
The artist Joana Vasconcelos is one of the names present at the Pop Art exhibition that will be inaugurated on the 13th, at the Biennial Museum of Cerveira, in Vila Nova de Cerveira, the organization announced today.
According to the statement, the Cerveira Biennial Art Foundation (FBAC), which shares the organization of the exhibition with the Fundación Cum Laude, said that there will also be works by Andy Warhol, Steve Kaufman, Keith Haring, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein, Pietro Psaier, Mel Ramos and Robert Rauschenberg.
The exhibition, titled ‘Pure Pop Art’, will be inaugurated on the 13th, at 6:00 pm, at the Museum of the International Art Biennial of Vila Nova de Cerveira, located in the cultural forum of that district of Viana do Castelo.
According to the FBAC, “this is a private collection of graphic art from the company MBA Grupo Incorporado that will be presented for the first time in Portugal”.
“For us, it is an honor to present these great timeless greats of Pop Art at the Cerveira Biennial Museum and this is one of the most respected artists in the country, Joana Vasconcelos,” said FBAC president Fernando Nogueira, quoted in that note.
The curator of the exhibition, Ángeles Rodríguez Baliño, called the exhibition in Vila Nova de Cerveira a “challenge and responsibility”.
“Joining it to a work by Joana Vasconcelos is making sure that this timeless movement is more alive than ever,” he said.
The serigraphs, the posters, and the installations “represent popular icons of the time that the visitor will recognize”.
“From more than 120 works, the show presents a nostalgic touch to the memory of Marilyn and James Dean, with a deep admiration for Warhol’s work, the curiosity of Pietro Psaier’s figure and Steve Kaufman’s social responsibility, the exuberance of Keith Haring, the excellent work of Mel Ramos, the innovation of Rauchsenberg and a little mention of Robert Indiana, “added Ángeles Rodríguez Baliño.
The exhibition, which will remain open until 19 October, also includes two videos provided by Tate, London.
The Pop Art movement “emerged in London, England, in the 1950s and reached its maturity in New York in the United States of America in the 1960s.”
The movement “links art to mass production, popularity with the avant-garde and develops a new artistic concept by relating intimately with the consumer society.”
In May, the Museum of the Art Biennial of Cerveira was awarded the Museum of the Year Award 2019, awarded by the Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM).
The Museum of the Year Award is one of the main distinctions awarded by APOM, in a total of 27 categories, which distinguish, among other areas, the best intervention and restoration, the best catalog, the best exhibition, patronage, and museographic project.
This year’s APOM Museum Distinction aims at the entity responsible for organizing and managing the collection of works of art created during the course dedicated to contemporary art, held over 40 years ago in Vila Nova de Cerveira.
