João Almeida led one of the most important events in the world velocipedic calendar, the Giro de Itália, in which he wore the pink jersey, symbol of leader, for 15 days, finishing the competition in fourth place.

In the selection of the CNID jury, the cyclist obtained 80 votes, 11 more than the rider Miguel Oliveira (69), who in his second year in the main category of world motorcycling, MotoGP, was ninth in the World Championship and won two Grand Prix, Styria, and Portugal.

Still in the male vote, pilots António Félix da Costa and Filipe Albuquerque received the same 41 votes, while motorcycling pilot Duarte Benavente counted 17.

Elected the female athlete of the year, Maria Martins, 21 years old, won in November the bronze medal in the elimination event of the European track cycling in Plovdiv, culminating a year in which she had already been bronze in the scratch discipline in the Worlds from Berlin in February, and in October silver and bronze in European under-23s.

In the jury’s vote, the cyclist received 46 votes and surpassed the judoka Telma Monteiro (40 votes), who, also in November, won silver in the Europeans of Prague, in what was her 14th medal in the same number of participations in the competition.

The third most voted female athlete of 2020 was the canoeist Joana Vasconcelos, who won the K1 500 meters in the World Cup in Szeged, Poland
