João Paulo Esteves da Silva’s new album, País Distante, will be presented on December 3rd at 8 PM at the Auditorium of the Fundação Oriente in Lisbon. The album is a doubly important milestone in the Portuguese music scene: on the one hand, it marks 30 years of recordings by the composer-pianist, whose debut under his own name, Serra sem Fim, dates back to 1995; Another event inaugurates the new Artway Jazz catalogue, a label of Artway Editions that promises to become a reference for national jazz.

Of note is the introductory conversation on December 3rd at 7:30 PM, featuring Mário Laginha (pianist and composer), João Barradas (accordionist and composer), Vanessa Pires (director, Artway), and João Esteves da Silva (producer, Artway Jazz).
Recorded at La Buissonne studio in southern France, País Distante presents a newly formed quartet featuring Julian Argüelles on tenor and soprano saxophones, Rodrigo Correia on double bass, and José Salgueiro on drums. The repertoire ranges from Esteves da Silva’s compositions, including two unreleased pieces, to a series of collective improvisations with a strong compositional focus.
Traversing sounds such as Portuguese jazz, European jazz, avant-garde jazz, classical music, and rock, this album can be seen as a kind of extraordinarily concise synthesis of the vast universe of João Paulo Esteves da Silva, one of the most original figures in European music of recent decades.
