João Silva bronze in the first World Cup triathlon 2019

The Portuguese triathlete João Silva was third today in the men’s elite triathlon World Cup event in the sprint distance in Cape Town (South Africa), which opened the 2019 season.

The Benfica triathlete completed the course in 52.19 minutes, finishing 15 seconds behind the winner, British Alex Yee (52.04 minutes), and finishing with the same time of the second place, the North American Tony Smoragiewicz.

Of the remaining Portuguese, Ricardo Batista was 42nd, Vasco Vilaça came in 55th and Miguel Arraiolos did not finish the race.

In women’s sprint distance, the best Portuguese was Melanie Santos, in 14th place, finishing the three segments (swimming, cycling and running) in 58.50 minutes, 1.26 minutes more than the 35-year-old Japanese veteran Ai Ueda , which was imposed on North American Summer Rappaport (57.31) and Tamara Gorman (57.44).

Helena Carvalho finished the competition in Cape Town in 22nd place, with a record of 59.32 minutes, while Andreia Ferrum was not beyond the 53rd position with 1.07.35 hours.

The next stage of the Triathlon World Cup takes place in Mooloolaba, Australia, on March 16.
