The 64th-ranked ATP Vimaranense beat Kukushkin, 57th in the world rank and sixth in a row, in two sets of 7-6 (10-8) and 6-2, in an hour and 50 minutes.
In St. Petersburg, the Portuguese tennis player was a runner-up in 2015, in a career in which he has lost seven finals and won three, in Kuala Lumpur in 2013, Valencia in 2015, and Estoril in 2018.
Joao Sousa will face Croatian Borna Coric, 15th in the semi-finals and pre-designated fourth in St. Petersburg, who beat Norwegian Casper Ruud 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3.
