João Sousa defeats Shapovalov and advances in Auckland

The Portuguese João Sousa, 44th in the world tennis rankings, qualified for the second round of the Auckland tournament today, beating Canadian seventh seed Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

In their first game of the year, the Portuguese number one needed two hours and 22 minutes to defeat Shapovalov, 27 of the circuit, and ensure passage to the round of 16 of the New Zealand tournament.

The Vimaranense will play a place in the ‘quarters’ against British 93-year-old Cameron Norrie, who beat Frenchman Benoit Paire, 55th, 6-3, 6-2 in 58 minutes.

João Sousa reached the final of the Auckland tournament in 2017 when he lost the decisive encounter against the American Jack Sock.
