João Sousa descends to 110th place in the ATP ranking
Portuguese tennis player João Sousa moved down to 110th place in the ATP ranking, which continues to be led by Serb Novak Djokovic, despite the defeat by Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the Masters 1,000 final in Rome on Sunday.
João Sousa has moved down three positions in the ATP hierarchy and is just one step ahead of Pedro Sousa, who remains in 111th place and is, therefore, the second best Portuguese among the world elite.
Djokovic, despite being beaten in the confrontation with the left-handed Rafael Nadal, who won the 10th title in Rome and 36th triumph in Masters 1,000 category tournaments, held the leadership of the world ranking, being followed by the Russian Danill Medvedev.
Although he prevented the Serb from revalidating the title in Rome, the 34-year-old tennis player from Manacor remains in third place in the world hierarchy, in a top 10 that, this week, has not undergone any change.
Among the remaining Portuguese players, Frederico Silva again registered a new career peak, when he ascended to 169th place, on the same day that Nuno Borges entered, for the first time, in the top 300, appearing in 296th place. João Domingues is, still, the third best national representative, when occupying the 226th position.
In the WTA ranking, led by the Australian Ashleigh Barty, followed by the Japanese Naomi Osaka and the Romanian Simona Halep, there was a new entry among the top 10 in the world, with the rise to the ninth place of the Polish Iga Swiatek, champion on Sunday of the tournament. Roma, pushing Czech Karolina Pliskova to 10th position.
