João Sousa eliminated in the first round of the Olympic singles tournament
The Portuguese tennis player, number 137 in the world ranking, lost to Tomas Machac, number 145, by 1-2, in a match played at the Ariake Tennis Park, which lasted two hours and 34 minutes.
The athlete from Guimarães started the match well, and won the first ‘set’ by 7-6 (7-5). However, the Czech opponent refused to lower his arms and managed to turn the score around, winning the next two sets 6-4.
Thus, João Sousa’s dream of at least repeating the performance achieved at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016, when he was eliminated by Juan Martín del Potro in the second round, comes to an end.
