The countdown has already begun for the Joaquim Chaves Saúde Porto Pro, the second stage of the MEO Surf League, which has the first call for this Friday at 7:30 am, on the beach of Leça da Palmeira.
The best national surfers, who compete in the first division of Portuguese surfing, will be in action on the waves of Porto and Matosinhos, in a remarkable moment, with the entry into competition of Jéjé Vidal and Danilk Afonso, surfers from São Tomé and Príncipe, who will compete for the first time at the highest level on the main surfing platform in Portugal.
Jéjé Vidal – Surfer from Sao Tome and Principe
“Competing in the MEO Surf League is a dream come true and an achievement after five years. I haven’t been competing regularly and I’m not at the same pace as other surfers, but it will be a good adaptation to a new reality regardless of the result. I’m going to live the dream, surf, and have fun. I’ve never surfed in Leça da Palmeira and I’m looking forward to it since the beach breaks are unpredictable. I’ve been analyzing some videos of previous championships. Above all, I will face everything with a party atmosphere and give my best. I’m ready!”
Danilk Afonso – Surfer from Sao Tome and Principe
“I thank Liga MEO Surf for having unblocked the situation and letting non-community surfers compete. I’m very happy with this opportunity and I’m going to do my best, show my surfing and get a good result. Ever since I left São Tomé and Príncipe, I’ve always wanted to come to Portugal and compete in the MEO Surf League. Competing is my focus and it makes me train to improve my surfing. I’ve never surfed in Leça da Palmeira and I’m going to arrive a day earlier to analyze the sea and sandy bottoms. To be competing in the same championship with my friend Jéjé Vidal will be something very special. It is the realization of our dreams!”
The Joaquim Chaves Saúde Porto Pro is also Teresa Bonvalot’s first competition with the official status of qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, an additional factor of interest for the surfer who also won in Porto and Matosinhos in recent years. three years in a row (2020, 2021, and 2022). The current national champion, Guilherme Ribeiro, and Gabriela Dinis will arrive in the North of Portugal wearing the yellow lycra Go Chill of ranking leaders after having won the inaugural stage of the MEO Surf League.
Francisco Morgado – Race Director
“We are going to have a competition window marked with wind from the south quadrant, which is very favorable for Leça da Palmeira. In terms of swell, small waves are expected for the initial rounds on Friday, with the sea gradually rising, with a special incidence on Saturday afternoon. However, everything seems to line up in terms of wind, waves, and weather for the Joaquim Chaves Saúde Porto Pro finals to take place on Sunday with the best conditions of the entire weekend.”
During the first day of the Joaquim Chaves Saúde Porto Pro, the Amar o Mar initiative, led by the Jerónimo Martins Group, will have the participation of around 100 children from schools in the municipalities of Porto and Matosinhos.
