The EDPCOOLJAZZ Festival started yesterday, and that night, one of the biggest names in jazz, soul, pop, gospel, or R&B was at Hipódromo Manuel Possolo, in Cascais, John Legend, and it was fantastic.
The return to Portugal, by the hand of Live Experiences, and where iNeews was present, after the postponements of EDPCOOLJAZZ, because of the pandemic, couldn’t have been better, and the public did not miss it, the hippodrome was full, with eager fans, to see and hear John Legend, one of the greatest artists of our time.
John Legend, one of the few artists who has an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award on the shelf, took us on a journey through his musical path and played ‘Everything Is Everything‘, ‘Encore‘, the composition for Estelle, ‘American Boy‘, and ‘You Don’t Know My Name‘ theme he sang with Alicia Keys.
He also mentioned his enormous gratitude for the career he achieved, “I always wanted to make music and you are a dream come true“, the audience was always accompanied by the North American artist, with applause or singing, and could hear, among others, ‘I Only Have Eyes For You‘ by Boyz II Men, ‘Penthouse Floor‘, ‘Glory‘, ‘Love Me Now‘, but also an unreleased ‘All She Wanna Do‘.
Taking the stage alone, at the piano, he sang ‘PDA‘, ‘Feelin’ Good‘ version of Nina Simone’s theme, ‘Save Room‘ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water‘, by Simon & Garfunkel, which he dedicated to his grandmother, now deceased. , who taught him to play the piano, ending with ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You‘, which John wrote with Meghan Trainor, and left a message, “If you’re with someone you love, let them know.”
But John Legend couldn’t leave Cascais without singing ‘All Of Me‘, a song he composed for his wife Chrissy Teigen, and which was sung in chorus by the public, which filled the first day of the festival, so asked if he could play one more, of course, we would have heard many more, and it was with ‘Under the Stars‘ that the concert ended.
The music, however, was present in the garden and in the Hippodrome, from 8 pm, first with Gileno Santana Trio – Miles Davis Legacy, in Jardim, where there are many trailers, with food and drink, so that the wait for the beginning of the concerts is also a moment of conviviality and joy together with friends and family.
Before John Legend entered the main stage, it was Murta who had the task of warming up the festival’s audience, and he managed to do it effortlessly, interpreting his latest songs, but also “Georgia on my mind“, a theme by Ray Charles, who introduced him to Portugal, on The Voice Portugal.
