Portuguese judoka Jorge Fonseca -100kg World Judo Champion and Fu Yu, a gold medal winner at the Women’s European Table Tennis Tournament, were awarded the Olympic Committee of Portugal Sports Excellence Medalist.
The Sao Tome and Principe native judoka was the 2013 European Under-23 Champion and won silver in the team competition at the Minsk European Games and at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, was 17th.
Fu Yu, who won the gold medal at the women’s tournament of the European Games, will be present at the Tokyo2020 Olympics, was also present at the Rio2016 Olympic Games in 33rd place, and won the silver for teams at the European.
Born in Hebei, China, she has Portuguese nationality since 2013 and was the first Portuguese to win medals in Europeans.
Bessone Basto, an Olympic swimmer, was also awarded the medal of merit, João Ganço, former coach of Nelson Évora, with the National Olympic Order, Francis Obikwelu and Susana Costa, athlete and triple jump, and Armando Aldegalega, who was in 1972 the standard-bearer of the Portuguese mission in the Munich Olympic Games, with sports ethics award.
Judoka Patrícia Sampaio, at -78kg, again received the Youth Award for her bronze medal in the Junior World Championships and fifth place in the Junior World Championships, as well as Ricardo Batista, triathlete, Junior World Champion and third in Europe
Repsol was awarded the prestigious prize of the Portuguese Olympic Committee for its support to the sport.
